Chhata is also known for its historical significance which finds mention in Sanskrit scriptures. The name is a distortion from Sanskrit word Chhatra Van. Chhatravan is associated with Shri Krishana leela where his friends declared him as King of Braj and celebrated the occasion with great pomp and show. Shri Balram and friends were assigned different duties to perform the state affairs. One friend named Shridama provided Chhatra symbol of king in this forest. After this leela the van become famous as Chatra Van. Another interpretation is that there were dense trees in this forest, which used to cover the earth like several umbrellas.
Chatra Van like other 137 forests of Krishna leela has vanished from the scene. The Braj foundation has taken a sankalp to revive them all. We requested the local leaders and municipal body to identify the area where this historic van can be recreated. They happily cooperated and offered the following public land for this purpose. In Krishna’s time the whole area was Chatra Van. Now we have to be satisfied with whatever is being offered as part of it.
The landscape designer and architects of The Braj Foundation have developed complete beautification plan of this Van. The job includes; soil treatment, drip irrigation network, landscaping, pathways, stone benches, diorama of Krishna with His playmates carrying chatra, signage, boundary wall, gate and guard’s room. We need about Rs. 2.29 Crores for this project. The Braj Foundation is trying to raise the funds to restore Chhatra Van.
