Yashoda Kund, Nandgaon

History of the site

When the demons sent by King Kansa were constantly coming to kill Krishna, His father Nand Maharaj decided to shift to a far off place from Gokul. Situated in Nandgaon this is one of the sacred Kunds of Braj. It is dedicated to Yashoda ji, the mother of Krishna.

As per the belief of Brajwasis, Mother Yashoda comes here every day to bathe both her sons Krishna & Balaram along with their sakhas (friends). Sometimes delighted to inhale the fragrance of the Kadamba trees they did shringara with flowers, flaunting it to their mother. The other sakhas often climbed the trees as they scrambled to catch each other, in this manner delighting the vatsalya prem or maternal love of Yashodaji.

On the Western bank of the Kund there is a place called Hau-Bilau. Here Krishna-Balaram use to play endlessly with Their cowherd friends. Mother Yashoda would threaten Them that a hobgoblin called Hau-Bilau will come and eat Them. Hearing this, innocent Krishna-Balaram would run to take shelter of Yashoda Maa and thus she would happily carry Them. Statues of Hau-Bilau are still present at this place.

Plight of the site

Yashoda Kund for decades had been collecting garbage and sewage of the village. Its water is highly polluted and existing ghats are in shambles. The Kund is surrounded by Keekar shrubs. On one corner of the Kund there is a circular platform of Hau Bilau, which is in a dilapidated condition and needs a complete facelift.

Proposed Development Plan

In February 2013, The Braj Foundation started the restoration of Yashoda Kund. Dr. N. D. Desai, Chairman of Apar Industries (Mumbai), has assured full financial support for its restoration. He wants to dedicate the restoration to the fond memories of his dear mother Late Smt. Shantaben D. Desai. She was the follower of Shri Ballabh Sampradaya and this Kund is associated with this Samradaya. Dr. Desai is popularly known in ISKCON circles by his spiritual name H G Shrinath Das. He is a great devotee and preacher. The Foundation’s team is excited with this new project as it is the opening to the several other projects in Nandgaon.
